I have personally spend so many hours on looking for the maps and I found this to be a little easier for an idea to dig.
Things to Be Aware of:
Digging in an incorrect area will lead to a chance that the pit beast can grab you. If it does, you will be brought to the pit where you must fight the creature. If you lose, you die and lose the QP you used to start the quest you were doing and you will have to do the quest over again.
Items you need to buy from the village:
Shovel

Items you might want to buy:
Parrot - You can send the parrot to go treasure hunting. Once you do you can once again move around and do other things. You can receive money, or map pieces from the parrot using the treasure hunt feature.
